Nel 1993 Golden State l’aveva acquistato in uno scambio di scelte con Orlando, per poi cederlo ai Washington (per Tom Gugliotta e 3 prime scelte) dopo i dissapori affiorati tra lui e Don Nelson.
In seguito, per 12 anni consecutivi, la franchigia di San Francisco aveva guardato i playoff alla televisione, fino alla scorsa stagione.
Ora Don Nelson pare aver decisamente cambiato idea nei confronti di Webber, ancora libero sul mercato dei free-agent, e corteggiato anche da Lakers e Pistons; le sue dichiarazioni odierne lasciano pochi dubbi sulla volontà di riabbracciare il figliol prodigo e mettere una pietra sul passato:
“I hope that it happens to be quite honest with you, I think our team needs it.
I’ve learned over the years. I’ve softened a bit through some of the experiences I’ve had.
[b]I look back at the time when Chris and I were here early in our careers[/b]. We were both pretty stubborn and [b]I was maybe too tough and he was too young to see the positives I was trying to bring to the table.[/b]
I’ve learned and I think he has, too. Hey,[b] I’m an old man and he’s an old player[/b].”
E così pare ufficiale l’offerta partita per casa Webber, 1’200’000 dollari, come da tabelle NBA, per una trattativa che potrebbe già concludersi in settimana.
