E’ periodo di College in Italia e Lunedi 17 agosto Castelfranco Veneto (TV) ha ospitato i Drake Bulldogs, direttamente dall’Iowa, Des Moines. Quest’Università privata gioca nella Conference Missouri Valley (per intenderci quella dominata da Wichita State negli ultimi 3 anni) e ha concluso il suo tour europeo proprio vs l’ Io Master Castelfranco, squadra di casa che militerà nel Campionato di Serie C Silver che per l’occasione ha usufruito di un paio di aggiunte nel roster.

Grande affluenza di pubblico al Palazzetto Dello Sport, circa 450 persone, che pur avendo assistito ad una partita a senso unico, non hanno fatto mancare mai il loro supporto dopo ogni canestro e hanno incoraggiato sempre i propri beniamini.
La partita è stata in equilibrio solamente il primo quarto, chiuso da Drake in vantaggio per 28-16, poi è stato un monologo statunitense, Castelfranco peccava di “big men” sotto canestro e i pochi che potevano avvicinarsi al gigante Jensen (213cm per 110kg) o al Freshman polacco Olejniczak (209cm e 104 kg), erano in panchina con problemi di falli.
Il secondo quarto ha segnato un solco troppo netto per permettere una rimonta da parte dei padroni di casa poiché si è concluso sul 25-63. Nel terzo (38-91) e nel quarto la musica non è cambiata, anzi la squadra americana non si è mai fermata e ha continuato a martellare il canestro di Castelfranco, da sottolineare la sportività di Coach Ray Giacoletti, che dopo aver visto i suoi lunghi dominare e aver provocato la doppia uscita per falli dei due lunghi italiani, ha invitato il Coach di casa, Fabio Ussaggi, a rimetterli sul parquet per non trovarsi con 5 “piccoli” in campo.
Il match si è chiuso sul 115-51 per Drake, alla fine premiazioni per i due MVP della serata: Rizzo autore di 20 punti per Castelfranco, mentre per i vincitori il play Karl Madison.
Grande prova della “flotta” di Freshman di Drake, composta da ben 4 Freshman, quasi tutti in doppia cifra: Wampler 10, Olejniczak 15, McGlynn 14 e per il norvegese Dolven 6 punti.
A fine match ho scambiato due parole con il Coach dei Bulldogs, Giacoletti:
Last year was not very good (9-22, 7th nella Conference in RS e poi perso al primo turno del Torneo di Conference), how are your expectations for this coming season?
We have basically all Freshman and Sophomore, with two Juniors and so we will make a big jump. I think we could arrive at 16-17 wins, we have some good young players but they just don’t have experience, that’s why trip is awesome.
I think your recruiting is based a lot to Europe world, cause there are one Danish, one Polish, one Norwegian, why this love for Northern Europe?
Well, we were at food chain of College Basketball, there are 351 Division I teams, we can get a player like the Polish kid or the Denmark kid , we can get them in the States and Drake academically is a very good school and so we can come overseas, so it’s a little bit easier to get this kind of players.
There are a lot of team that want American players so you need to go to other countries. Yeah
Are there possibilities to see your team to the NCAA Tournament next year? Because Missouri Valley is mid-major Conference (Mid-major is a term used in American NCAA Division I to refer to athletic conferences that are not among the so-called “Power Five conferences” (High majors: ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC).
But in our League last year we had two teams that finished the season on the top 15 of the country (Wichita State & Northern Iowa), so probably not this year, but hopefully one more year we can be good enough for NCAA Tournament. Great Question!
Poi dopo la doccia, sono riuscito a parlare con due Freshman di stampo europeo: Johannes Dolven (JD), ala norvegese di 2.02 m del ’96 e Dominik Olejniczak (DO) centrone polacco di 2.08 m sempre del ’96.
What are the differences between playing in Europe and Usa?
JD: Pace(ritmo) of the game: everything go so much faster, more attention to details, you can’t slack on defense, everybody stronger, longer shotclock. I think that we (as European) move the ball and share the ball more and we have an European style in this team.
DO: I think that basketball in the States is more physical, basketball in Europe is more tactical. When I come to do first practice here, I miss open lay-ups, they steal me ball all time, so it’s also more quick
How did this “dream”(playing with Drake) happen?
JD: I played in European Championship with Norway (16.5 pts e 12.4 rb di media, wow!) and Coach Townsend talked to me, he found me, he used to coach in Northern Illinois, so we kept talking for years, then he came to Drake and he offered to me this oppurtunity. I came to Usa for a visit, watched the school and then decided.
DO: European Championship, I was in under 18, Polish National Team, Coaches from USA come to this event and watch, if they like how you play, they text you or call you and this is what happen to me. They came to Poland like four times (3!!) to see me, talk to my parents.
Why Drake?
JD:I wanna get a good education, basketball means lot for me but education is important for me too. And for me to play basketball while I get free education in States is absolutely amazing. I’m studying Business. I’ve a scholarship, everything is free, if a stay in Europe, probably i play for money but no study, in this way i can still play in Europe later, but if I get hurt, if i break my leg, I can still have a degree.
DO: I’ve couple or more propositions from other College, but they show me the more interest, they came to Poland four times, no one did this. I just trust them, my parents love them. I will be in good hands for this four years. I’m studying Advertising.
Tentare di capire e addentrarsi nel mondo del recruiting NCAA non è semplice, sarebbe interessante capire i meccanismi, Drake è solo una delle 351 realtà presenti in Division I. Siete pronti a seguire anche Drake quest’anno?!
